Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time, and addressing it requires involving those most affected—local communities. That’s the goal of Climate Talks, an event aimed at fostering dialogue between local communities, key stakeholders, and experts on critical environmental issues and the impact of climate change. Organised by the German Embassy in collaboration with the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the event is creating a platform for meaningful discussions on ways to respond to and adapt to climate change.
On September 16 in Kumasi, stakeholders gathered for the third edition of the Climate Talks series, which centred around the theme “Energy Transition Dialogue.” The discussion, focusing on “Decarbonizing Waste for Cleaner Energy,” brought together government officials, private sector representatives, and environmental experts to explore the urgent need for closer partnerships in the fight against climate change.
The forum emphasised the importance of effective collaborations between the government and private sector to drive sustainable solutions such as climate-adapted buildings, clean water access, solar kiosks, and climate-smart agricultural programmes. Key areas of focus included research and development for projects like waste-to-energy, which require substantial infrastructure and investment to be successfully implemented. Stakeholders stressed that these efforts demand not only funding but also clearly defined areas of investment, regulations, and standards to ensure success.
The Role of Renewable Energy
Ms. Sivine Jansen, Deputy German Ambassador to Ghana, highlighted the global challenge of managing waste and transforming it into a valuable energy resource. She shared insights from Germany, which has transitioned from heavy reliance on traditional energy sources like coal and gas to a renewable energy mix that now accounts for over 50% of the country’s energy supply. Renewable sources like wind, solar, and bioenergy have become pivotal in Germany’s climate strategy, and Ms. Jansen encouraged Ghana to adopt similar practices through collaborative efforts that can create jobs and promote renewable energy solutions.
Bridging the Gap Between Waste and Energy
Dr. David Ato Quansah, Director of the Brew-Hammond Energy Centre at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), underscored the importance of thoroughly understanding the available resources before deploying waste-to-energy technologies. According to Dr. Quansah, data credibility, techno-economic analysis, and cultural considerations must be carefully evaluated to determine whether these technologies will be effective in Ghana. He also pointed out the urgent need for more reliable data on waste in the country to ensure that the right solutions are implemented.
A Call for Climate-Smart Infrastructure
Mr. Noah Gyimah, Chief Investment Officer of the Jospong Group, reiterated the importance of communities embracing climate-smart infrastructure. He noted that government incentives and tax policies play a crucial role in supporting such initiatives. By making climate-smart investments more accessible, communities can help mitigate the effects of climate change and promote long-term sustainability.
